Series: Winter's Last Refuge
As a multidisciplinary artist, I tend toward experimenting with different ways to realize a given vision. I am versed in traditional methods such as painting or drawing, but I don't shy away from using any tool at my disposal. Sometimes the tools or the process can become part of what makes a piece interesting. This is one of those pieces.
This project was created using a combination of sculpture and ink-tank photography. The sculpture was one using Virtual Reality in a 3D program. It was essentially like using real clay without the mess. It cannot be overstated how incredible it was to stand in the middle of a room and manipulate a giant "clay" tree in real time. Once 3D printed, it was hand-painted and sealed for use in the water-filled tank. Most of us have seen ink-tank photography at one time or another, even if we weren't aware that's what it was. Various colors of ink are dropped into a tank and photographed as they move through the water.
This can be controlled to an extent, but the beauty is in the unexpected ways they move, combine, and settle. In the end, hundreds of photos were taken, with only a few being deemed worthy in my estimation. These canvas prints are each one of a kind.
